I rlly liked this movie, i just think it's weird how it relies on nostalgia at some moments and jokes but completely ignores the Scooby doo franchise at others (also there are some jokes that are not gonna age well, even tho the movie is pretty funny. My take as a somewhat younger Scooby-Doo fan, I grew up in a period of the early 2000s, a time-period where VHS and DVD were on its way out and I just saw these old movies sitting on a shelf. One day, I got convinced by a sibling to watch Scooby-Doo, and, as a lover of mysteries, it was everything I loved! Growing up, I became an extreme fan of the series and watched all of the direct-to-dvd adventures, each having some redeeming qualities. Moreover, it felt like the series was really starting to hit it's stride somewhat in the 2010s with Mystery Inc. and Scoobynatural totally subverting what the audience thought Scooby-Doo could be. It felt like I was growing up with the series and it was interesting. And then, Be Cool Scooby-Doo happened, and while I didn't hate it, it felt like a downgrade. The series ended rather quick and in my head I wondered, what could possibly be next? When I heard they were making a Scooby-Doo theatrical movie, I was so excited to feel like I was getting into the series all over didn't happen though. I'll list 3 big complaints I have and why, as an already fan of the series, I just can't enjoy the movie personally: Not hiring the old voice casts alone would have potentially turned me off. It has nothing to do with the voices, I'm aware one day these people will have to retire from their roles, but the fact is, they simply ARE these roles right now. AND, they wanted to be in it. It just feels like Hollywood ruining a property into what they think will sell (like Teen Titans Go) that I can't stand it in all honesty. Hell, Frank Welker voices Scooby and Fred in the cartoons, but he only voices Scooby here? Why? So they could have the talented voice casting of Zac Efron for Fred? Welker was already hired for this movie... I just don't get it -I knew going into this movie, it was gonna be the first stepping-stone, for a Hanna-Barbera Universe, but I didn't care. The thing about extended universes is, you don't jump the shark right away. Iron Man, as a movie, feels like it's about Iron Man. If you don't watch that post credits scene, it's just an amazing, single superhero movie. But you know its implications extend beyond. In short, it's subtle. Here, there's these characters that even at 20, I only recognize from OTHER Scooby-Doo crossovers, and could frankly care less about. I watch Scooby-Doo, frankly, for Scooby-Doo, if I wanted to watch a Hanna-Barbera tribute, there's plenty of places to do so. If they marketed it, or directly said this is what the movie would be like, I would just be upset a little true, but I would just write it off as something that just isn't for me. This just feels like a grab to get people in to sell tickets, in order to trick kids into actually recognizing these characters for further shoe-horned properties to come. -The utter, seemingly disrespect for Scooby-Doo as a medium is what really gets me. Scooby-Doo is one of the oldest surviving medias in history, not just animations. As such, there's a sort of legacy and spark to it, that comes with the age. In this regard, however, it felt like they destroyed everything it was. There's barely a mystery involved, the gang are never together, Velma comes off as smart being her only characteristic (and she's Hispanic now. with Fred and Daphne just being there. Then there's this sort of god element with Scooby, which could've been cool but feels off for this movie? Like, don't get me wrong, Mystery Inc. was out there, but they built up to was of left field. Like, take Scoobynatural. This was a crossover totally out of the blue, but it was an appreciation. The callbacks were short and funny, they didn't feel out of place. They messed with the formula, but in relation to the Supernatural, and, you could tell how much they truly loved the original series. They did their best to make sure they were honoring the original as much as possible, and, as someone who never watched Supernatural, I was thoroughly impressed. This feels like a money grab on the Scooby-Doo name which is all too common in today's media. I could go on, but I've already written so much. I'm well aware that as a young adult, I'm not the target audience, I know. But, with that being said, as someone older who is probably supposed to like this movie based off nostalgia and knowledge off these other Hanna-Barbera characters, I 't. It does everything wrong in my book, and, while it might be an interesting movie if I've never seen a Scooby-Doo movie before, just like Teen Titans Go, when I have the original source material to look back on, I just don't see how I could ever come to support the new media. I wish Scoob! and Scooby-Doo the best moving forward as a series very fond to my heart. But, if this is what the future holds for the mystery gang and dog, I'd much rather reflect on the various old media we've received and perhaps, finally let the show have its end.
